Regular homework assignments begin this week. At this time homework will be paper copies (not digital). Please check your child’s homework even if he/she completes it at school.
Reading Comprehension/Fluency
Tonight’s reading homework includes a reading passage that is to be used for fluency practice as well as reading comprehension. I suggest two readings for this assignment. First, read for fluency. Use a timer. Read through the entire passage and record the time it took to read it in the box provided. If mistakes are made, subtract those from the total and record that number in the words read box. Do not worry about the words per minute box.
I suggest saving the comprehension for the end. Have your child read through the passage again and then answer the questions. We will be working on comprehension in class, and I will be encouraging students to look back to the story for the answers to make sure they are correct. I shrink the pages down to save paper/copies. If your child needs more room to write his/her answers, I am happy to supply blank paper.
Tuesday - Wednesday Homework
On Tuesdays, one of the assignments will be a short story that includes an idiom. The purpose of this assignment is to use context clues from the story to figure out what the idiom means. Please do not look up the meaning online. Wednesday night’s homework supports our reading program and often includes grammar practice.
Spelling Words/Test/Thursday Homework
Every Monday, the students will be responsible for writing down their 20 spelling words for the week. The students write the words down as part of our phonics/spelling instruction. We sound the words out together and use the sound spelling cards to determine the correct spelling. They should practice the words throughout the week in order to be ready for the test on Friday. I will include a Spelling Choice Board in one pocket of your child’s homework folder. The students will choose one option each week for their Thursday homework to practice the words. Please do not write directly on the choice board. To save on copies, this choice board will remain the same throughout the year and the students will be provided with paper to complete the assignment of their choosing. Spelling homework and tests will begin the week of September 6th.
Reading
Students should be reading a book of their choosing for 20 minutes each night.
Math
This year we will be using the Eureka Math program. I will be sending home 2 pages of math attached to the reading homework each night. The first page is a “Homework Helper” page. This page gives parents examples of the math strategy taught that day. Students do not need to complete anything on this page. The second page is titled “Lesson _ Homework”. This is the page that students should complete.
Please contact me with any questions you may have.
